Recently, I was sent the completed graphic report from the Gathering of Friendship and Connection conference. This was a gathering focused on strengthening pathways for children, youth, families, and communities through Indigenous knowledge, collaboration, and shared learning.
Seeing my graphic recordings transformed into a polished report was a wonderful reminder of how graphic recording can extend the life of an event. The conference outcomes were put together using the graphic recordings and images of the participants.
Graphic Recording Helps People See Common Themes and Connections
Throughout the report, the graphic recordings bring together keynote presentations, panel discussions, community conversations, and participant ideas. Themes such as early childhood development, land-based learning, Elder knowledge sharing, belonging, cultural identity, and community wellness are woven into a visual narrative that reflects not only what was discussed, but how the ideas connect.
One of my favourite sections highlights the importance of Elder knowledge. The visuals help to show the emotion and relationship of the connected ideas from the event.
Why Graphic Reports Are So Valuable
The report also captures practical ideas that emerged from participants. Many of the topics discussed were about creating spaces in nature for learning (land-based knowledge), recommendations for welcoming babies and families, creating friendly and safe spaces for families and so on.
This is one of the greatest strengths of graphic recording.
When people can see relationships between ideas, they often understand them more deeply. A graphic report becomes much more than meeting notes, it becomes a lasting resource that organizations can revisit later.
A well-designed graphic report also extends the impact of a conference. It helps participants recall conversations they may have forgotten, gives those who couldn’t attend a meaningful way to experience the event. It also provides organizers with a valuable take-away.
For me, that’s what makes this work so rewarding.
Every graphic recording represents a conversation. My goal as a graphic recorder is to honour those conversations while creating visuals that people genuinely enjoy reading, sharing, and returning to long after the event is over.
